What is the future of memory? Is it in the physical, where people, places and objects act as triggers? Or is it in the digital, where collections of photos, videos and social media posts remind us of lived experiences. In this digital age, I find that we are almost entirely dependent on our phones to act as that extra storage to contain memories that otherwise may be forgotten. Albums of photos that document every aspect of a holiday can be the easiest way to remind yourself of the time you had, but that does not mean a physical souvenir or memento cannot do the same thing?
I am creating this body of work, that exists in both the digital and physical worlds, with the intent of looking back on it in the future and subsequently being reminded of the whole process. It will act as an archive that is uploaded and exists for what would seem to be forever. This work will act as a trigger for those memories. I also aim to consider the subjectivity of memory. Memories are undoubtably personal and are significant to only those who experience them. As we share more and more of our lives online, are these memories still ours to keep? Or does the digital world encourage others to experience alongside?
